I’m Maiko Sawada — a journalist, photographer, translator/interpreter, book editor, podcaster and digital media editor and PhD researcher in journalism.
My book, Impacts of Museums on Global Communication, was presented at Sorbonne University (Paris), the Graduate Institute (Geneva), and the University of Naples II (Italy). I have also worked as a researcher for UNESCO’s museum research units in the Asia-Pacific region.
Over the past several years, my work has focused on stories related to gender, migration, and diversity across Japan, Asia, and globally. My editorial experience includes contributions to renowned French and British publications such as Le Nouvel Observateur, Financial Times, and Les Échos.
Previously, I worked as a translator and interpreter for major global institutions. These include the French Embassy in Japan (Consulate Services), LVMH, Christian Dior Japan (Marketing), UNHCR Japan (Protection Unit), and the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Currently, I write about Japan for international outlets such as Raffia magazine, covering topics related to gender, feminism, and diversity. I also develop a web magazine that explores these themes within the Japanese context. In parallel, I consult for Japanese institutions to help them communicate their activities globally in English and French — supporting media strategy, marketing research, and international networking.
I was born in Toyama, grew up in Saitama, Japan, attended secondary school in New Zealand, earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts from International Christian University in Tokyo, and obtained a Master’s in International Studies from the Graduate Institute in Geneva.
In my free time, I enjoy playing the viola, swimming, and running.
